July 2018, Maria Zachariae and her husband signed the papers to take over a detached house in Uetikon am See, 20 min drive from Zürich on the Gold Coast. The house had not undergone any renovations since it was built in 1963 and stood out in its original form. It was built in concrete and bricks by the local Zurich architect Albert Caviezel. 

The outer shell of the villa has all the key elements of a Mid-Century, modern house: a very rigorous and geometric external form, flat roof and large windows to bring outdoors in. The villa develops on two floors for a total of 200 square meters with the ground floor being almost an open plan even though wisely organized in functional areas.

The rear facade is composed by a mix of dark-brown bricks and grey concrete overlooking the large garden that unfolds on two sides. Maria Zachariae renovated the house with respect for the original architecture and tried enhancing the original elements where it was possible and then at the same time adding the comfort and design of a 2020´s house.

Major interventions are the removal of the vines, the creation of a walkway from the parking lot to the house, a big terrace in the rear garden,new shutters, sunblinds and a modern galvanized steel railing on both balconies.

Inside all walls have been plastered and painted with a white silicate paint to allow the walls to breath. The overall terra-cotta flooring downstairs  have been sanded down and impregnated. Upstairs the overall existing flooring of Wenge, has likewise been kept, sanded and oiled.

Inside the bathrooms, toilets and kitchen has been totally redone with new  tiles of Lavastone, by danish Brand File under Pop, fitted furniture in smoaked oak, designed by the architect and produced by de Place Furniture, all fittings by Vola in the kitchen combined with a Quooker. Kitchen tops a combination of stainless brushed steel and lavastone. Behind the newly established gas stove from Smeg a backsplash of pale yellow glazed ceramics, again from File under Pop creates a beautiful warm contrast to brushed stainless steel.

The bathrooms are kept very minimal, the very decorative sink by Konstantin Grcic for Laufen with its curves creates a contrast to the straight lines.
